Dear Summer Arts Conservatory families,
I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. It is with a heavy heart that Justin and I write to inform you that this year, the Summer Arts Conservatory will have to cancel our 2020 sessions.
I cannot tell you how difficult this is for us – since 2012, we have eagerly looked forward every year to the hundreds of campers who would join us for an exciting summer of creativity and imagination.
However, numerous school districts, colleges and universities across California (including CSULA at which LACHSA is located) have already announced that their campuses will remain closed throughout the summer for both summer school and summer camps in an effort to promote continued social distancing. We agree with CSULA's decision to close campus and strongly feel that it simply is not safe to operate the camp at this time. There is no way for us to maintain social distancing and run the camp. The last thing we would want is for our campers or staff to become sick and possibly infect their families.
Additionally, we have spoken to several other camps throughout the Los Angeles area, and all of us are in universal agreement that to conduct camp would be irresponsible and recklessly endanger the health of our families and staff.
Families who have already enrolled in camp this year have received an email with instructions on how they can obtain either a refund or a credit. If you have enrolled but have not received an email yet, please check your spam folder first and then contact us.
Additionally, we are very excited to announce that this summer, we will be offering FREE enrichment video lessons online! We know how hard this pandemic has been on families, and we want to do our part to help keep kids active, engaged, and learning at home over the summer. As such, families that have already enrolled will be given free access to our Online Summer Learning program.
The OSL program features enrichment video lessons from the different departments offered at the Summer Arts Conservatory. All of the lessons are taught by our staff and are offered for free to families that have enrolled in the Summer Arts Conservatory regardless of whether they choose to receive a refund or a credit.
The OSL program will be available starting Monday, June 15th - families who have enrolled in the Summer Arts Conservatory will receive an email with a link to the OSL portal prior to the launch date with further instructions. If you have not enrolled but would like to access our OSL program, please email us and we will add you to our list!
On a personal note, the cancellation of camp this summer has been just heartbreaking for me and my husband. We're not a big company with a CEO or board of directors taking a large salary but instead, a husband and wife team who is feeling the impact of this pandemic as keenly as our families are right now. My husband is a public school theatre teacher at La Canada High School, and I am a proud graduate of both LACHSA and CSULA. I've worked at LACHSA for over 12 years in a number of positions and both my husband and I continue to volunteer our time to help whenever we can. Our summer staff is comprised of LACHSA teachers, alumni, and students, and it's truly devastating we won't be able to hire our 80+ seasonal employees this summer.
To our campers - your children - we want you to know how sorry we are that the Summer Arts Conservatory won't be happening in person this year. We know many of you are eager to see your friends and return to a sense of normalcy this summer. While that might not happen in person this year at the Summer Arts Conservatory, we know that the creation of art never stops, and we can't wait to see the amazing art you create at home. Feel free to share with us via email or social media. Stay creative and passionate, and we will see you next summer!
Stay safe and be well.
Madison and Justin Eick
