What ages do you accept to the program?
The Summer Arts Conservatory is an advanced training program for students interested in exploring the curriculum utilized at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. As such, we accept students ages 10 to 15. Students not in the aforementioned age bracket (both younger or older) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Do you still have space in the program?
Yep! We still have space in all of our departments!
I contacted your company but I haven't received a response yet.
Did you check your spam folder? Our emails often land there so make sure you check your spam folder as well as your inbox! Also, we maintain a minimal staff during the non-summer months (to keep the cost of tuition down) and it may take us a few days to get back to you!
How do I apply? Is there an audition process?
Registration opens January 1st. Simply click on the link entitled "Registration" located at the bottom of this page and fill out our registration form. Payment is required at the time of registration. Once you've successfully registered and paid, you'll receive a confirmation email and that's it! One week before your selected session begins, you'll received a "first-day details" email with all of the information you'll need to start camp! Make sure to check your spam folder as our emails sometimes land there!
I was just accepted to LACHSA for the fall - is this program right for me?
Absolutely! Get a head-start on your LACHSA experience this summer and familiarize yourself with the curriculum and faculty.
I'm not attending LACHSA next year - can I still enroll in the program?
Yes! Even if you've chosen to attend a different school in the fall, you still can be a part of the LACHSA community and develop your skills at the Summer Arts Conservatory.
Can the Summer Arts Conservatory guarantee me admission to LACHSA?
No. The Summer Arts Conservatory is owned and administered by the Theatrical Education Group. We are not a LACOE program, we are not involved in any way with the audition process at LACHSA, and we cannot guarantee admission to LACHSA. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for students to explore the curriculum utilized at the Los Angeles High School for the Arts alongside LACHSA teachers and alumni.
Can you explain how the daily schedule works?
The Summer Arts Conservatory utilizes a rotational class schedule very similar to the daily schedule utilized at LACHSA. In the mornings, ALL the students will attend five general arts classes from each of the five departments offered at the Summer Arts Conservatory. Specifically, students will take the following classes: Improv (Theatre Department), Singing (Music Department), Drawing (Visual Arts Department), Production Studio (Cinematic Arts Department) and Biomechanics (Dance Department).

In the afternoons, students will take three intensive classes within their chosen department. In the Theatre Department, students will take Scene Study, Stage Combat and Audition Technique. Students in the Music Department will take two vocal ensemble classes (Classical and Jazz) as well as a Music Theory class. Within the Visual Arts Department, students will take classes in Painting, Art History/Theory and Graphic Design. Students enrolled in the Cinematic Arts Department will focus on three different production genres: Music Video, Commericals and Short Films. Finally, the Dance Department will offer students an opportunity to study Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary/Modern.
What should I do if I have to pick my child up early?
No problem! Simply give us a note when you drop your child off in the morning informing us as to when you'll be picking up your child that day. Early pick ups must be communicated on the day of by giving us a written note. If you need to pick up your child unexpectedly in the middle of the day, please call our office at 818-957-1619 and follow the prompts to speak to the on-site camp coordinator.
Do you offer discounts or scholarships to students?
Yes, we do offer discounts! Discount codes can be found on our promotional materials (posters, flyers, postcards, etc.) By entering a valid discount code, the total tuition cost will be reduced by $45.00. Discount codes cannot be combined with the Early Bird tuition rate, cannot be applied to previously submitted applications and may only be used once per student. We also offer a special referral refund - please email us for more details. Unfortunately, at this time we do not offer scholarships.
Are there any additional fees for any of the classes?
Students who enroll in either the Visual Arts Department or the Cinematic Arts Department for their afternoon intensives will be charged a small fee for materials. Both the Visual Arts students and the Cinematic Arts students are charged an additional $25.00. This fee covers the cost of expendables, supplies, materials and equipment particular to those classes.
Do you offer a payment plan?
The Theatrical Education Group cannot facilitate payment plans paid by check. However, if you have a PayPal account, you can choose “PayPal Credit” as your payment method. When selecting your payment option during the registration process, select "PayPal" and log in to your PayPal account. You can then choose the "PayPal Credit" option. This financing plan (offered through PayPal only) consists of no payments, no interest for 6 months!
My child is going to miss part of the camp - can you prorate the tuition?
Unfortunately no. We hire our staff per session (as opposed to per week or per day). Hence, even if your child only attends two of the three weeks, we still have to hire our teachers for the full session. The good news is that missing a few days (or even a full week) is no problem! As long as we know in advance, we will make sure to tailor the curriculum so that your child doesn't miss critical information or lessons!
What if my child doesn’t like the program? What’s your cancellation policy?
No problem! If you decide to cancel your enrollment for any reason from the date you submit your registration up through the third day of the camp, you can receive a full refund of the tuition minus a non-refundable $100.00 deposit per session. Beginning with the fourth day of camp, there is no refund available. You must notify us via email if you desire to cancel your enrollment. Please allow up to two weeks to process your cancellation.
How are students broken up into groups?
During the morning classes, students will be grouped by age. During the afternoon classes, students will be grouped by art department. If you would like to request your child be grouped with a friend of the same age, you may do so and we will do our best to accommodate your request. NO switching of groups is permitted after the first day of the program.
Is there a culminating event?
Yes, each session of the Summer Arts Conservatory culminates in a final performance in Caroline's L.O.F.T. at LACHSA. Admission is free. Students are expected to stay all day on the final day of the program for the dress rehearsal and dinner will be provided for the students. For more information, please click HERE
Can my child attend only one week or half days? What if we have to miss a day?
The Summer Arts Conservatory is structured as a full-day, 3-week program and we hope your child can attend the program every day. If you have to miss a day or two because of vacation plans or your school schedule, we completely understand and that's not a problem at all. If you have a longer schedule conflict that would cause you to miss more than a few days, please email us so we can work something out. We cannot pro-rate the tuition for missed days.
Can my child attend both sessions? Are both sessions the same?
We would love to have your child attend both sessions! Many students choose to attend both sessions! While the classes offered for both sessions are the same, we alter the curriculum for repeat students to ensure that they have an opportunity to work on new performance material.
What level of training will my child receive? Does this program require prior experience?
At the Summer Arts Conservatory, we welcome all levels of experience! Our instructors are trained to adjust the curriculum to meet the individual needs of the students. Beginning students with no prior experience will be made to feel right at home while advanced students will be given differentiated instruction to ensure their needs are being met!
Are there any special supplies or clothes we need to bring?
Students enrolled in the Visual Arts Department or the Cinematic Arts Department will need to pay a $25 materials fee for expendable supplies - all other materials for the remaining departments are provided by the Summer Arts Conservatory! Our official dress code is as follows: students are asked to wear comfortable, loose clothing that will allow for rigorous physicality and movement. All clothing must be free of profanity, advertisements for alcohol or illegal substances and generally in good taste. No midriffs please. All students must wear closed toe/heel shoes – sandals and /or flip-flops are NOT allowed. Shorts must be worn under skirts.
I ordered a Summer Arts Conservatory t-shirt. When will I receive it?
T-shirts ordered at the time of registration will be handed out during the first week of the program. Additional t-shirts can be ordered throughout the session and will be distributed as soon as payment is received. It is encouraged (but not required) that campers wear their Summer Arts Conservatory t-shirt for the final performance.
I ordered a Summer Arts Conservatory DVD. When will I receive it?
DVDs will be mailed to the home address listed on the registration form by September 15th.
Do you provide meals for the students or does my child need to bring a lunch?
There are two nutrition breaks and a lunch break every day. Students must bring a sack lunch with them every day. Teachers cannot purchase food for students. There is no microwave or refrigerator. Food and/or drink of any kind is strictly forbidden in the theatre, computer labs, and cinematic arts studio. Students are strongly encouraged to bring a water bottle with them every day. For your convenience, refillable water canisters and snacks are available for purchase at the camp. During the breaks and lunch, we have a large, shaded amphitheater in which the students can relax and socialize.
